With careful planning, rainwater can be captured, slowed, filtered, infiltrated where conditions allow, or stored for later use.<\/p>\n<p>LASquare combines landscape design and water management to develop practical solutions suited to each site\u2019s rainfall, slopes, soils, groundwater and drainage patterns.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>A site-led approach<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Depending on site conditions, stormwater measures may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Rain gardens, infiltration wells and trenches<\/li>\n<li>Rainwater storage and reuse<\/li>\n<li>Detention areas for controlled release<\/li>\n<li>Retention ponds and constructed wetlands<\/li>\n<li>Biofiltration planting and safe overflow routes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These measures can work alongside engineered drainage. Each design considers runoff, water quality, neighbouring properties, safety and maintenance.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Designed for lasting value<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Planting and landform can support system performance while contributing to habitat and the character of the landscape. Regular access, inspection and maintenance are considered from the outset.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Experience across different scales<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>LASquare\u2019s approach draws on work in Canada and South Africa. Earlier large-scale Canadian projects helped shape an approach that brings environmental considerations together with technical design and landscape planning. When the storage system is full, overflow is directed to an infiltration trench, where it can soak into the underlying soil and contribute to groundwater recharge.<span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong> This keeps stormwater on site or infiltrating into the ground during normal rainfall. Discharge to the municipal stormwater system occurs only during very significant rainfall.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The design objectives also included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Reducing the pool volume from approximately 120,000 to 50,000 litres<\/li>\n<li>Creating a generous outdoor space for family gatherings<\/li>\n<li>Improving privacy<\/li>\n<li>Adding a fire pit and braai area<\/li>\n<li>Connecting the adjacent cottage with the pool area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-1019-3-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-1019-3-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"5\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">LASquare redesigned the backyard and assisted with construction, integrating a rainwater storage system into the renovation of the existing pool. The system can store approximately 75,000 litres of rainwater underground, retaining water on site and reducing immediate runoff from the property.<\/p>\n<p>Collected rainwater passes through a gravel sump and sand filter before entering the storage tanks. The treated water is reused for landscape irrigation and the pool. The two concrete tanks are concealed beneath a composite deck, with an access section for inspection and maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>The redesigned pool includes shallow and deeper swimming areas, a protected underwater net, and an infinity-edge catchment that also serves as a wading area for small children. A large underground cistern is designed to collect and pre-filter runoff from building roofs and the site\u2019s paved and landscaped areas.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>Stored rainwater is intended for landscape irrigation, replacing evaporation losses from the water feature, pump demonstrations at a dedicated facility, and selected uses within the office building. Capturing and reusing runoff helps keep water on site for practical purposes and reduces the need for other water supplies.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The landscape includes mostly indigenous, drought-resistant plants, chosen to provide a resilient and attractive setting throughout the year. It then flows to a large detention pond, which temporarily stores stormwater and controls peak flows during heavy rain.<\/p>\n<p>From the pond, water is released at a controlled rate into a larger system of biofiltration ponds for further treatment before entering a sensitive creek that provides wildlife habitat.
